First Day School meets every week from September through early June. We attend Meeting for Worship from 10am until 10:15 and then everyone proceeds downstairs to First Day School. We return upstairs for announcements at 11 am.
Elementary A is for children from pre-kindergarten through first grade. Children listen to stories, draw, prepare food for the potlucks, help with plantings and learn to be Friends.
First Day School Meeting is for children from second through eighth grade. For the past few years, it has run like the larger Meeting – we have a clerk and committees. We hold Meeting for Business about every six weeks, where we discuss concerns and projects, reach consensus and go forward with projects. We ask members of the Meeting to speak to us on many topics and issues.
Our Building & Hospitality Committee is responsible for the state of our meeting place. Projects have included replenishing the bird feeder weekly, spring and fall plantings around the meetinghouse, making the game center, building a walkway in front of the meetinghouse for safer access and the annual potluck prepared by First Day School.
Our Peace & Social Concerns Committee oversees service projects to help the community. Projects have included a canned food collection for Camp Street Ministries, an annual meeting-wide gift giving project at Christmas to a local shelter or an international project, preparing emergency disaster kits and collecting old batteries for recycling.
First Day School Meeting has contributed articles to The Provident FRIEND.
