Introduction
The Saylesville Meeting House was built in 1704 and has been repaired and added to several times since. The basic building is timber framed with chestnut main timbers and hemlock sheathing. The sheathing is covered with clapboards from the early 19th century. Some of the windows are flashed.
Over the last 25 or more years there has been a problem with powder post beetles and a variety of insect control methods have been considered. Currently, monthly insect control treatments have been used. Over that same period and much longer water leakage problems have increased and Heritage Restoration was called in to assess the problem. |

Based on the rather limited information available from the interior and clapboard covered exterior, it was decided to remove the clapboard and assess the basic structure. Subsequent to that assessment some sill and joist replacement and bracing was undertaken to stabilize the building. It has been made weathertight and is awaiting decisions by the Meeting concerning further work. |
