Worship with Us |

| The form of our worship service is an hour of shared silence. Without an appointed spiritual leader to guide us, we sit together in silent worship, and stand up and speak when inspired to vocal ministry. Quakers have no written creed, but central to our faith is an understanding that the Light of God is in everyone, and thus that God is available to us all. From this central idea the testimonies of Friends flow: Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Service to others.
Friends worship is a rich concept and a simple activity. Friends believe in direct communication with God and continuing revelation. We sit in silent “waiting” for communication with God. Anyone may receive a message from God at any time. Meeting for Worship is a time when those present try to clear their minds of distractions in order to hear God’s voice within us. While this is an individual activity, a group of Friends sharing the seeking of God's message is much more than a group of individuals sitting alone in silence. Join us on a Sunday morning, and you will share an hour of deeply spiritual silent worship with between thirty and sixty adults, each striving for individual inspiration. Out of the silence, someone may rise and share with the group the ministry that has come to him or her. These spoken words (often brief, but sometimes up to five minutes or so) may inspire another to speak on a similar theme; or not. Nevertheless, our practice calls for a period of silence between each speaker, and what is said is never conversational or argumentative. The hour closes with a member of the Ministry and Counsel Committee shaking the hand of a person close by, and we all share similar greetings. The Clerk will then ask for introductions and announcements. We then gather downstairs for refreshments and conversation. On the first Sunday of each month we hold a pot-luck lunch to which all are invited. Children attend our FIRST DAY SCHOOL program, and join the adults for the first fifteen minutes of our silent worship and again at the rise of Meeting for our introductions and announcements. We meet for worship every Sunday at 10:00 am (Providence) or 10:30 am (Conanicut & Saylesville). See individual Meeting pages for more details. |
